Having recently watched the trilogy proper as I’ve only seen clips I view Maurice’s understanding here as more the fact while he himself has had bad experiences with Humans he has the instincts to know not all humans are bad Orangutans by nature are incredibly lax and passive creatures only really fighting when necessary so Maurice with the booster effect of the drug that made the apes smart his instincts would be even more elevated which is perfect for his character as Caesar’s consort and the teacher for all the children in the troop which really adds to the Sage disposition orangutans give off especially the males of Maurice’s species
